Sign Up

Google Analytics is a great resource for anyone who runs a website. It is free to use and the statistics that it provides you with are very eye opening. The first step is signing up and it is totally free just go to http://www.google.com/analytics/ to sign up if you already have a gmail account it will add analytics to your Google account.

Add your website’s profile

After signing up the next step is to add your website’s profile to your analytics account. Once you are logged into your account there is an option on the bottom left to Add Website Profile. On the next page all you have to do is enter your websites URL into the form and hit finish. On the next page you will be given the java script code that you need to add to your website. Highlight this code and copy it to the clipboard.

Add the code to your site

The next step will be to add this to your Wordpress blog. Google recommends adding the code right before the </body> tag on every page of your site. Luckily, if you are using Wordpress, this means just pasting the code into one file. So login to your Wordpress blog’s admin area and then go to Design > Theme Editor. Once you are at the Theme Editor page you will see an area on the right that reads Theme Files and below that are a list of… your theme’s files (imagine that). The file you want to edit is footer.php so click on that and then scroll to the bottom of that file. Once you are at the bottom look for the HTML tag </body> and click on a blank line right above that and paste the Google Analytics code right there and then save the file.

On some web hosts you can’t edit your Wordpress theme files directly in Wordpress unless you have your permissions on your theme file set to 777, which is a security risk and if that is the case with your host you should FTP into your account and download footer.php, copy the Google Analytics code into the file, save it, and then upload it back to your host. The theme files are in your /wordpress/wp-content/themes/yourcurrenttheme and then grap the footer.php file from that folder.

So once you have Google Analytics what can you do with it? Here are some screenshots of the analytics dashboard.

As you can see Google analytics will show you the number of visits, page views, which pages people visit, how long they stay, and tons of other information. It is useful to know which part of your site that people are interested in that way you can keep those the same and improve other areas that don’t get as much traffic. There is even a website optimizer that will let you try out different content on your site to see which works out better.

I found this article on Wired via Digg and wanted to post about it. If you are hoping to one day don a metal suit and fly around through the sky like Iron Man then prepare to be disappointed. According to the article the energy requirements needed to put a person in the air and then fly around are simply too great to be supplied by the small suit with present day technology. One can only hope that those evil genuises / scientists work faster so we can get our sweet Iron Man suits.

The article did say that one feature of the suit that isn’t so much fiction is the cybernetic helmet and similar technology is already being developed.

First, I know there are plugins that do this, but I didn’t feel like using a plugin. Second, I got the idea for this from Jennifer Slegg’s blog post 52 easy ways to optimize your blog while on your coffee break. The link that she gave to Matt Cutt’s blog post How to highlight author comments in WordPress didn’t match up with the code my theme is using or the the default Kubrick theme (I think he designed his own theme). I’ll show you the method I used to modify my comments.php and style.css.

Be sure you have a backup copy of your style.css file and your comments.php file just in case

In your Wordpress admin panel go to design > theme editor

Open up your comments.php file

If you look in your comments.php code you will see the following line:

<li <?php echo $oddcomment; ?>id=”comment-<?php comment_ID() ?>”>

Change it to look like this:

<li <?php echo ($oddcomment = ($comment->user_id==1) ? ‘class=”author-id-1″ ‘ : $oddcomment) ?>id=”comment-<?php comment_ID() ?>”>

Save the file and now open up your style.css

We are going to add this line but change the #B3FFCC to whatever color you like:

.commentlist li.author-id-1 {
margin: 0 0 10px -25px;
background: #B3FFCC;
width: 510px;
}

You can add this line to any part of your style.css file that you wish, but it would make sense to add it near the other .commentlist lines. Also if you open your style.css file and find that your .commentlist lines have different margin and width attributes then I would match the new .commentlist li.author-id-1 to what your existing .commentlists are using.

Words of warning: This worked for me with no issues. I tried a few other methods that were suggested online and they didn’t work. If your templet is based on Kubrick you should have finding the lines to change and add. However, if your code looks wildly different then use your best judgement or grab a plugin to do it. As with all programming, there is more than one way to accomplish the task at hand so if you think of something better don’t hesistate to post it in the comments.

Some technical information to peruse if you so desire

The way that Kubrick and the template I’m using (studio press) alternate the background color of the comments is with the php variable $oddcomment. If you look several lines above in comments.php you will see this.

/* This variable is for alternating comment background */
$oddcomment = ‘class=”alt” ‘;

What happens on the server where your comments.php is stored is that the variable $oddcomment in the <li> tag is replaced with class=”alt” before the page is opened by your browser. Thus, the li tag would look like this when you view the source: <li class=”alt” id=”comment-x> x will be the number of the comment.

If you now look several lines below the <li> tag you will see this line:

<?php
/* Changes every other comment to a different class */
$oddcomment = ( empty( $oddcomment ) ) ? ‘class=”alt” ‘ : ”;
?>

What this line does is if $oddcomment is empty it sets it equal to class=”alt” if $oddcomment isn’t empty it sets $oddcomment equal to ”” which makes it equal to an empty string (aka nothing). What we did is add another option for what $oddcomment can be. If you are part of a blog that has multiple authors you could change the code and use a switch statement to give each author a unique CSS class that you can provide styling to.

If you look at the comments section of some of your favorite blogs you will probably see some comments that may look a bit strange upon first glance. I was curious as to what these comments are all about and I found out they are called Trackbacks and Pingbacks. After a little research (and by research I mean a quick Google search) I found a great site that explains both of them and even gives a little tutorial on them. Pingbacks, if enabled, are basically automatic after you change one setting in your blog. Trackbacks require a little more effort, but not much. Check out the whole post at http://www.optiniche.com/blog/117/wordpress-trackback-tutorial/
